My experience as a teacher has been one of the most challenging responsibilities I have ever assumed; it is a tough job that requires a lot of patience and self-control (yes, a lot of breathe in-breathe out exercises), but it is also a very rewarding experience that has allowed me to approach education as a communal activity rather than simply a boring act in which knowledge is to be delivered from an “academically qualified” faculty member to thirsty yet inert and passive minds.
Having said that, in my Broadcast-Journalism class the participants have been exploring the world of media through audio-visual experiments that allow them to approach communication from a merely practical stand which encourages the direct cooperation between teacher and students. In fact, the base for this course is cemented on the idea that it is all about transmitting powerful stories to the audience, and this process requires essentially two parts which are the product of the students imagination and the resources that the teacher offers: a well-defined plot and the materialization of this plot through an audio or video piece.

It is also important to mention that the students have been exploring the advantages of working as an organized communication team that operates by dividing tasks among the members. In fact, the participants of this class have been able to take on different roles in the communication-production field; from audio-visual editors and producers, to anchors, to script creators, and creative directors, the students have had the opportunity to simulate a broadcast communication company that creates stories that trigger our ability to create sensations of something that our senses can not perceive |
The following audio pieces have been created with a narrative that motivates the audience to create their own imaginary scene and thus be part of the creative process rather than just consume information–as if our minds were buckets where knowledge is to be boringly dumped.
